Summary
If you have already done some climbing and are looking to gain the skills and confidence that you need to become a lead climber on single pitch routes then this is the course for you. Over three days you will learn a 'toolbox' of essential lead climbing techniques that will allow you to operate successfully as an independent climber. By keeping the ratio of students to instructors low we ensure that we have sufficient time to have an in-depth approach to your learning. This detailed instruction combined with the wealth of stunning single pitch climbs that are available to us in the Peak District means that you will have had lots of opportunity to put what you learn into practice.

Lead climbing skills are introduced safely and progressively by our highly experienced instructors to ensure that you get the most from your course. You will learn everything you need to know to select an appropriate climb, assess what equipment is required and how best to use it and then climb the route safely and efficiently. By the end of the three days you will feel confident that you can safely lead climb on single pitch routes under your own steam.

Course Information
Each of the three days follows a similar structure. Initially you will meet at our base, The Adventure Hub, where your instructor will briefly discuss the objectives for the day with you. After ensuring that everyone has the necessary equipment you will very quickly be heading out to the venue that has been chosen based on the weather and the groups aims. Most of the venues that we use are approximately 15 minutes drive from our office and when you arrive you can expect to walk for between 5 and 15 minutes to reach the rock itself. You will spend the whole day working on practical, hands on activities as each day builds on the techniques you have already learned. Expect to do a lot of climbing as you practise your new found skills.
At the end of the day you will return to The Adventure Hub for a coffee and debrief where you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have and decide on what your priorities should be for continued improvement.
If you have any energy left then you are welcome to use our indoor bouldering wall where a bit of friendly competition is not uncommon!

While the exact order of teaching is based on your previous experience and ambitions a typical course will proceed something like this:

Initially the focus is on introducing, refreshing and refining the skills associated with seconding a climb including effective and safe belaying of a lead climber. This is an excellent way to begin the process of understanding the different types of climbing equipment and how to use them appropriately and efficiently. It is also an opportunity to look at the principles of climbing anchor systems.

After reviewing and practising the placement of climbing protection you will move on to actually leading a climb. This process will be safeguarded in a variety of ways by your instructor as they slowly work to improve your confidence and abilities. You may find your first attempt at leading is protected from above by a top rope or your instructor may opt to ascend a rope next to you so they can offer advice and assistance at any part of the climb.

You will continue to improve the placement of protection, develop rope management skills, learn alternative options for anchors as well as working on the mental aspects of lead climbing. At each stage you will find yourself making progressively more decisions about how to approach a climb with your instructor always available to advise. By slowly removing any direct help in a controlled and safe environment while all the time refining and adapting your new found skills your instructor will ensure that you finish the three day feeling confident in your ability to lead single pitch climbs independently.
All required equipment can be provided. If you have any equipment of your own then you are welcome to bring it along.
Some previous climbing experience along with a good level of general fitness is required. Participants who are already operating at the level of a competent second, perhaps by attending our Improvers Climbing Course, will gain the most from this course.
FAQs
Start time: 09:30 - Finish time: 16:30. Please note, these times are approximate and could be subject to minor changes. Please leave plenty of time when booking public transport.
We are exceptionally lucky to be located a 5 minute walk from Bamford Train Station on the railway line that links Sheffield to Manchester. This also means we are very easy to get to from London.

We have noticed that the first connecting train from London is often around 09:36am, and courses often start at 09:30am, if you let us know that you are coming in on the train, we will happily delay the course start to suit.

We try to stick to our published course finish times but occasionally conditions on the day mean we overrun slightly. If you are travelling home by train please ensure that you have left sufficient time after the course end time and inform your instructor on the day of your travel plans.
This course is a non-residential course, so we do not provide any accommodation. However there are many amazing places to stay locally. Take a look at our accommodation guide in the info section for more information.
As much as many of our instructors are dog lovers, this often isn't suitable if you are booking onto a scheduled course, as we can't guarantee that other members of the group don't have an allergy or problem with dogs. If you do want to bring a pet, we will happily accommodate you if you book a private instructor for you or your group.
Bookings can be made online or over the phone. All of our courses can be booked in 3 ways:

a) Attend a scheduled course.
These are open to the public to anyone that meets the pre-requisites. We often advertise many dates for each course, we generally always list 12 months of available dates. This is the most popular and often works out the most cost-effective way of attending our courses.

b) Add a date to our schedule.
On some courses, we can add extra dates to our schedule, providing you are booking for a certain minimum number of participants, this could be as low as only 2 people. To give us plenty of time to assign staff to your course, you can only add a date to the schedule if it is more than 7 days in advance.

c) Make a private booking.
All of our courses can be booked privately, with a private instructor just for you or your group. This gives you the flexibility to book any date that suits you and also it means the instructor can fine-tune the course content to suit your aspirations. To make a private booking, you just need to fill our a booking request, we will then get back to you with availability and a price.

d) Book our premium 'Private Booking Plus+' service.
All the benefits of the private booking service, with lots of additional extras including meet & greet at your hotel, luxury picnic hamper including Champagne, digital photo pack, flexible booking arrangements and a pre-activity consultancy to allow your first-class instructor extra time to design your special day. To make a private booking plus+ booking, you just need to fill our a booking request, we will then get back to you with availability and a price.
Anyone aged 13 or over can attend any of our scheduled courses, either with or without an accompanying adult.
We do hold an AALA license and are able to take out younger children, however we only offer this on a private guided basis. See our private guiding rates, as this can work out very competitive, especially when booking as a family.
There is no maximum age, if you feel young enough to attend then you are very welcome!
It is essential that you let us know about any medical condition or injury when booking and that you also let your instructor know on the starting day of your course. This information will remain completely confidential but is essential to allow us to tailor our activities to suit you and to ensure the safety of other group members.
Almost all courses begin and end at our base, The Adventure Hub, where you will have access to complimentary tea and coffee.

We do not provide food as part of our courses and you will need to bring a packed lunch along for each day. There is a cafe on-site that can provide you with sandwiches, cakes and drinks. If you pre-book a lunch with them they will deliver it fresh to our offices first thing each morning. Taste Buds cafe can be reached directly on 01433 208008.
