Private Climbing Lessons in the Peak District: Prices and How It Works

Our scheduled courses are a great way to learn, but they don't suit everyone. Maybe you can only get away on a particular weekend. Maybe you're a strong indoor climber who wants to skip ahead, or you'd like a day on the gritstone just for your family. That's where private tuition comes in.
It's one of the things we get asked about most, so here's how it works.
What is private climbing tuition?
You book a qualified instructor just for you, or for you and the people you choose. You pick the date, and the instructor builds the day around what you want to achieve. Nobody else joins, and nothing is fixed in advance apart from the start time.
How much does it cost?
Prices include VAT and all the technical equipment you need.
- Half day: from £195
- Full day: from £285
Those are the prices for one person. Adding a second or third person costs a little more, but it's still far less than booking separately. For example, a half day for three people is £220, and two full days for two adults is £650 in total. Our online quote system will price your exact group and dates.

Who is it for?
- Couples, friends and families who want a day to themselves. Children are welcome on private sessions, and there's no need for a parent to climb.
- Teenagers. Under 18s can come without an adult on the day, as long as a parent or guardian completes our participation form.
- Experienced indoor climbers who want to move outside quickly, without starting at the very beginning.
- Climbers with a specific goal, such as leading trad, multi-pitch, setting up top ropes, or getting over a plateau.
- Anyone short on time. If you have one free weekend, we'll make it count.
What can we cover?
Anything from your first time on rock to advanced trad. Popular private days include:
- A first taste of outdoor climbing and abseiling
- Moving from indoor to outdoor climbing
- Building anchors and setting up safe top rope systems
- Leading on trad or sport routes
- Multi-pitch climbing (we can travel further afield for this)
- Coaching on movement and technique to push your grade
We'll ask about your experience and goals when you book, so your instructor can plan the right venue and content.
How the day works
We meet at 9:30am at The Adventure Hub in Bamford, between Hathersage and Hope. Half days run from 9am to 12:30pm or 1:30pm to 5pm. After a quick chat about your experience and plans, we sort out kit and head to one of our local crags.
We provide helmets, harnesses, ropes, climbing shoes and all the protection. If you have your own gear, bring it along, as it's good to learn with the kit you'll use. Otherwise you just need clothes for a day in the hills (including a warm layer and a waterproof), plus lunch and a drink for a full day.
If the forecast changes, we'll be in touch. With a private booking we can often start earlier to beat the rain, or switch to a more sheltered crag.
Private or a scheduled course?
If your dates are flexible and you're happy learning alongside others, our scheduled courses are excellent value. Take a look at our guide to which climbing course is right for you.
If you want a particular date, a tailored plan or the instructor's full attention, go private.
