Our Patreon Navigation Course: Keep Your Skills Sharp for £3 a Month

By Pure Outdoor · 6 October 2026

A group practising navigation on a Peak District moor

Navigation is a skill that fades if you don't use it. You can learn to take a bearing or read contours on a course, but it's regular practice that makes it second nature. That's why we set up our Patreon navigation community: an easy, low-cost way to keep learning between trips to the hills.

What is it?

Our Patreon page is an online navigation course that keeps going. Each fortnight we post a navigation task based on a real map: a route to plan, a position to work out or a feature to identify. You have a go, then compare your answer with ours.

It follows on naturally from our free online map reading course, and it's a great way to stay sharp before and after a navigation course.

Free membership

Join for free and you'll get a navigation challenge every two weeks.

Premium membership: £3 a month

Premium members get everything in the free membership, plus:

  • The task analysis: a full walk-through of each fortnightly challenge, so you understand the how and why, not just the answer.
  • A weekly community Q&A: we answer a question from the community every week, as a video or a written post.
  • Early access to our monthly skills articles.
  • The navigation article archive: everything we've published, in one place.
  • Ad-free content.
  • A £20 Pure Outdoor gift voucher once you've been a member for 6 months.

That voucher alone is worth more than six months of membership, and you can put it towards any of our courses.

Try it free for 7 days

Not sure? You can try premium membership free for 7 days.

  • Anyone who loves a puzzle and the outdoors.

When you're ready to put it into practice, join us on a Right Way in a Day course in the Peak District.
