Summary

Suitable for beginners and experienced walkers alike, our comprehensive 1-day Peak District Navigation Course aims to build your skills and give you the confidence to plan your own walks and head outside. The valleys and high, wild moorland on our doorstep offer wonderful navigational challenges and great venues for learning.

From our Peak District training centre, our expert instructors begin with the essentials of map reading, looking at scales, contours and Rights Of Way, before progressing to compass techniques, navigation strategies and effective relocation methods on a quality day in the hills.

This one day Navigation Course will introduce you to the fundamental skills of navigation and give you experience of using these new found skills in the beautiful Peak District. An initial, short, theory session in our training centre is followed by a full day out on the hills giving you plenty of opportunity to practise and gain advice and encouragement from our experienced instructors. By the end of the day you will have a solid grounding in map reading techniques and some experience of using a compass.

Course Information
Your instructor will welcome you to our base, The Adventure Hub, and outline the objectives for the day, ensuring everyone has suitable kit for a day in the hills. After a brief theory session looking at maps, scales, Rights of Way, weather and emergency equipment we will head out to our venue for the day which will be chosen on the basis of weather conditions, along with the experience and ambitions of the group as a whole.

We will either strike out from our centre on foot or drive around 15 minutes to an alternative start point. We'll then work our way through the planned syllabus at a comfortable pace.

After lunch on the hill we'll bring your new skills together to cover longer distances incorporating various navigational strategies, hazard identification and relocation methods. At the end of the day we return to The Adventure Hub for refreshments and to review the day's key points. This is your opportunity to discuss next steps and draw up an action plan with your instructor.
Standard outdoor walking clothing, rucksack, waterproofs may be required, a packed lunch, map and compass can be provided.

FAQs
Start time: 09:30 - Finish time: 16:30. Please note, these times are approximate and could be subject to minor changes. Please leave plenty of time when booking public transport.
As much as many of our instructors are dog lovers, this often isn't suitable if you are booking onto a scheduled course, as we can't guarantee that other members of the group don't have an allergy or problem with dogs. If you do want to bring a pet, we will happily accommodate you if you book a private instructor for you or your group.
Anyone aged 13 or over can attend any of our scheduled courses, either with or without an accompanying adult.
We do hold an AALA license and are able to take out younger children, however we only offer this on a private guided basis. See our private guiding rates, as this can work out very competitive, especially when booking as a family.
There is no maximum age, if you feel young enough to attend then you are very welcome!
We are exceptionally lucky to be located a 5 minute walk from Bamford Train Station on the railway line that links Sheffield to Manchester. This also means we are very easy to get to from London.

We have noticed that the first connecting train from London is often around 09:36am, and courses often start at 09:30am, if you let us know that you are coming in on the train, we will happily delay the course start to suit.

We try to stick to our published course finish times but occasionally conditions on the day mean we overrun slightly. If you are travelling home by train please ensure that you have left sufficient time after the course end time and inform your instructor on the day of your travel plans.
Yes of course, you are welcome to leave anything (luggage) at the training centre during your course with us.

We get lots of questions about our navigation course and people are often asking which one is most suitable. We tend to point a lot of people at our Beginner Navigation Course as it is a great starting point.

To make life easier for you, we have also designed a course comparison table to help you choose the best course for you and to help you find out what you may learn!

It is essential that you let us know about any medical condition or injury when booking and that you also let your instructor know on the starting day of your course. This information will remain completely confidential but is essential to allow us to tailor our activities to suit you and to ensure the safety of other group members.
