Summary
If you already have some experience of navigating your way around on paths and tracks but are looking to extend your skills and move into more challenging situations then our Silver NNAS Navigation Course is for you. Over the two days you will gain valuable experience of the skills you need to successfully navigate across open countryside.

The course is practical and features as much time out on the hills as possible giving you plenty of opportunity to practise and gain advice and encouragement from our experienced instructors. This course is designed as a progression from our Beginner Navigation award but is suitable for anyone who has spent some time walking in the outdoors and feels confident navigating along paths and tracks.

Over 2 quality hill days you'll progress from identifying the right path to striking out across open terrain using contour interpretation and compass techniques as your primary navigational tools. Beginning with a brief refresh of the basics we then look to develop effective compass skills including map-to-ground and ground-to-map bearings, Back Bearings, Attack Points and Aiming Off. We’ll also cover practical techniques for holding bearings in poor visibility as well as identifying and negotiating dangerous and difficult terrain. Along the way you’ll hone effective relocation strategies in a variety of terrains using compass techniques and contour interpretation.
During the course you’ll work with a variety of maps and scales and have the option to cover the use of GPS units and smartphone apps. All aspects of planning are covered, including weather forecasting, equipment selection and nutrition.
The Intermediate Navigation Course is delivered and assessed to the Silver NNAS (National Navigation Award Scheme) level. By the end of the course you will feel confident in a range of compass techniques and have a far better understanding of contour features and how to make use of them.

Course Information
Your instructor will welcome you to our base, The Adventure Hub, and outline the objectives for the day, ensuring everyone has suitable kit for a day in the hills. After a brief theory session we will head out to our venue for the day which will be chosen on the basis of weather conditions, along with the experience and ambitions of the group as a whole.

We will either strike out from our centre on foot or drive around 15 minutes to an alternative start point. We'll then work our way through the planned syllabus at a comfortable pace. After lunch on the hill we'll bring your new skills together to cover longer distances incorporating various navigational strategies, hazard identification and relocation methods.

At the end of the day we return to The Adventure Hub for refreshments and to review the day's key points. This is your opportunity to discuss next steps and draw up an action plan with your instructor. Both days will follow a similar format.
Standard hillwalking gear including good waterproofs and walking boots/shoes. A packed lunch and a drink are also necessary. We provide maps and have some compasses available to borrow or buy. Do bring your own compass if you have one.
Some previous experience of navigating in the countryside, mostly on paths and tracks. This experience may have been gained on our Beginners Navigation Course or may have been self taught.
FAQs
Start time: 09:30 - Finish time: 16:30. Please note, these times are approximate and could be subject to minor changes. Please leave plenty of time when booking public transport.
As much as many of our instructors are dog lovers, this often isn't suitable if you are booking onto a scheduled course, as we can't guarantee that other members of the group don't have an allergy or problem with dogs. If you do want to bring a pet, we will happily accommodate you if you book a private instructor for you or your group.
Anyone aged 13 or over can attend any of our scheduled courses, either with or without an accompanying adult.
We do hold an AALA license and are able to take out younger children, however we only offer this on a private guided basis. See our private guiding rates, as this can work out very competitive, especially when booking as a family.
There is no maximum age, if you feel young enough to attend then you are very welcome!
We are exceptionally lucky to be located a 5 minute walk from Bamford Train Station on the railway line that links Sheffield to Manchester. This also means we are very easy to get to from London.

We have noticed that the first connecting train from London is often around 09:36am, and courses often start at 09:30am, if you let us know that you are coming in on the train, we will happily delay the course start to suit.

We try to stick to our published course finish times but occasionally conditions on the day mean we overrun slightly. If you are travelling home by train please ensure that you have left sufficient time after the course end time and inform your instructor on the day of your travel plans.
It is essential that you let us know about any medical condition or injury when booking and that you also let your instructor know on the starting day of your course. This information will remain completely confidential but is essential to allow us to tailor our activities to suit you and to ensure the safety of other group members.
Bookings can be made online or over the phone. All of our courses can be booked in 3 ways:

a) Attend a scheduled course.

On some courses, we can add extra dates to our schedule, providing you are booking for a certain minimum number of participants, this could be as low as only 2 people. To give us plenty of time to assign staff to your course, you can only add a date to the schedule if it is more than 7 days in advance.

c) Make a private booking.
All of our courses can be booked privately, with a private instructor just for you or your group. This gives you the flexibility to book any date that suits you and also it means the instructor can fine-tune the course content to suit your aspirations.
