Summary

This 2-day practical Peak District Navigation Course will equip you with transferable skills to get you out and about in the popular walking areas of the UK. Aimed at beginners looking to undertake self-guided walks in the hills, our beginner navigation course offers a thorough introduction to land navigation as well as essential skills for safety, planning and kit selection. You’ll also cover the effects of weather, how to deal with emergencies and gain a valuable understanding of our upland environment.

Run from our well-appointed training centre in the Peak District, you’re perfectly situated both for the high moorland and ridges of the Dark Peak and the beautiful valleys of the White Peak. After a short theory session covering Equipment, Maps, Grid References, Scales and Rights of Way we head outside to work on pacing and timing. Once on the hill we introduce the compass to set the map and check direction.

The second hill day it's over to you, beginning with a planning session looking at weather forecasts, guidebooks and online resources, you'll then strike out on a route of your own devising to practice and consolidate. This day also includes a short appraisal of your new skills.

To conclude, your experienced Pure Outdoor instructor will advise you on next steps and suggest ideal venues for progression. Recognised by DofE, Scouting and The Ramblers, the NNAS Bronze award is accredited by the Scottish Credit & Qualifications Framework (SCQF) at Level 4, and 2 SCQF credit points are awarded on completion.

Course Information
Your instructor will welcome you to our base, The Adventure Hub, and outline the objectives for the day, ensuring everyone has suitable kit for a day in the hills. After a brief theory session looking at maps, scales, Rights of Way, weather and emergency equipment we will head out to our venue for the day which will be chosen on the basis of weather conditions, along with the experience and ambitions of the group as a whole.

We will either strike out from our centre on foot or drive around 15 minutes to an alternative start point. We'll then work our way through the planned syllabus at a comfortable pace.

After lunch on the hill we'll bring your new skills together to cover longer distances incorporating various navigational strategies, hazard identification and relocation methods.

At the end of the day we return to The Adventure Hub for refreshments and to review the day's key points. This is your opportunity to discuss next steps and draw up an action plan with your instructor. Both days will follow a similar format.
Standard outdoor walking clothing, rucksack, waterproofs may be required, a packed lunch, map and compass can be provided.
No prior experience required.
