Summary

Our Beginner Outdoor Rock Climbing Course is the perfect way to experience climbing on real rock for those with little or no prior experience. Being based in the Peak District we have easy access to some of the best rock climbing in the UK which means our experienced instructors can always find the right location and level of challenge for you. This course is therefore just as suitable for complete beginners who have never climbed before as it is for those who have previously climbed indoors and are looking to refresh their skills or get a taste of climbing on real rock.

The first day follows the same format as our popular intro to outdoor climbing course. Initially you will learn everything you need to climb safely with the focus quickly moving onto increasing confidence and improving your climbing technique. Adding a second day gives even more opportunity for hands on experience of climbing and allows our instructors to introduce you to a greater range of climbing techniques, many of which are difficult or impossible to learn while climbing indoors. You will also have the opportunity to look at associated skills, you could for example try abseiling or begin to look at the wide range of equipment that is available to climbers.

Weatherproofed Climbing Courses

Our training centre 'The Adventure Hub' has an indoor climbing wall and bouldering wall facility along with a rope rigging skills and training area. Of course, we are excited to take you climbing outside on real rock, but for those multiple rainy days when we have exhausted our selection of sheltered crags, it's a great facility to come back to and exclusive to Pure Outdoor

Course Outcomes
  • Understand what equipment is necessary and how to use it correctly.
  • Develop and practise climbing movement skills on real rock.
  • Safely fit a harness and tie into a rope.
  • Belay and lower effectively and safely.
  • Experience abseiling.
  • Understand climbing guide books and grading systems.
  • Gain knowledge of the vast range of climbing opportunities in the UK and abroad.
Course Information
After arriving at our base, The Adventure Hub, your instructor will briefly outline the objectives for the weekend and ensure that everyone has climbing shoes, a harness and a helmet to wear. Very quickly you will be travelling out to the venue for first days climbing which will be chosen on the basis of weather conditions along with the experience and ambitions of the group as a whole. The vast majority of venues that we use are around a 15 minute drive from our office. Once you have arrived you can expect to walk for between 5 and 15 minutes to arrive at the climbing itself.

Initially the focus is on safety and you will learn about fitting your harness, tying into a rope and using a belay plate to protect a climb. These skills will continue to be refined throughout the weekend but the main focus quickly shifts onto climbing effectively and efficiently. The Peak District is known around the world for the quality and variety of the climbing available so we can always find routes to provide the right level of challenge no matter who you are and what you are hoping to achieve.

After a quick stop to eat your packed lunch (not provided) we will continue to work on climbing technique but will also talk about other related subjects such as how to use guidebooks, selecting climbing shoes of your own, environmental impact, ethics and etiquette.  At the end of the day we return to The Adventure Hub for a coffee and a debrief, this is your opportunity to discuss your progress so far as well as think about what you would like to achieve on the second day.

Day two gives you the opportunity to experience a completely different climbing venue, refine and improve what was covered on the first day and broaden your experience of climbing generally. Many people decide to try some abseiling at this point but that is just one of many options that are open to you.

Eventually we will return to The Adventure Hub for a final time to talk over everything you have learnt as well as discuss what opportunities there are to take your climbing to the next level. If you still have any energy left at this point then you are welcome to use our in house climbing wall to burn off a final few calories before making the journey home.
We can provide all the required equipment including climbing shoes but if you have a pair of your own then feel free to bring them along.

As much as many of our instructors are dog lovers, this often isn't suitable if you are booking onto a scheduled course, as we can't guarantee that other members of the group don't have an allergy or problem with dogs. If you do want to bring a pet, we will happily accommodate you if you book a private instructor for you or your group.
Almost all courses begin and end at our base, The Adventure Hub, where you will have access to complimentary tea and coffee.

On some courses, we can add extra dates to our schedule, providing you are booking for a certain minimum number of participants, this could be as low as only 2 people. It is essential that you let us know about any medical condition or injury when booking and that you also let your instructor know on the starting day of your course. This information will remain completely confidential but is essential to allow us to tailor our activities to suit you and to ensure the safety of other group members.
We are exceptionally lucky to be located a 5 minute walk from Bamford Train Station on the railway line that links Sheffield to Manchester. This also means we are very easy to get to from London.

We have noticed that the first connecting train from London is often around 09:36am, and courses often start at 09:30am, if you let us know that you are coming in on the train, we will happily delay the course start to suit.

We try to stick to our published course finish times but occasionally conditions on the day mean we overrun slightly. If you are travelling home by train please ensure that you have left sufficient time after the course end time and inform your instructor on the day of your travel plans.
