Our Beginner Outdoor Rock Climbing Course is the perfect way to experience climbing on real rock for those with little or no prior experience. Being based in the Peak District we have easy access to some of the best rock climbing in the UK which means our experienced instructors can always find the right location and level of challenge for you. This course is therefore just as suitable for complete beginners who have never climbed before as it is for those who have previously climbed indoors and are looking to refresh their skills or get a taste of climbing on real rock.

The first day follows the same format as our popular outdoor rock climbing taster day. Initially you will learn everything you need to climb safely with the focus quickly moving onto increasing confidence and improving your climbing technique. Adding a second day gives even more opportunity for hands on experience of climbing and allows our instructors to introduce you to a greater range of climbing techniques, many of which are difficult or impossible to learn while climbing indoors. You will also have the opportunity to look at associated skills, you could for example try abseiling or begin to look at the wide range of equipment that is available to climbers.

Our training centre 'The Adventure Hub' has an indoor climbing facility along with a rope rigging skills and training area. Of course, we are all ready to take you climbing outside on real rock, but for those rainy days when we have exhausted our selection of sheltered crags, it's a great facility and exclusive to Pure Outdoor.

Course Outcomes

  • Understand what equipment is necessary and how to use it correctly
  • Develop and practise climbing movement skills on real rock
  • Safely fit a harness and tie into a rope
  • Belay and lower effectively and safely
  • Experience abseiling
  • Understand climbing guide books and grading systems
  • Gain knowledge of the vast range of climbing opportunities in the UK and abroad

Course Information

YOUR BEGINNER ROCK CLIMBING COURSE

DAY ONE

9:30 - 16:30

Get ready to have a great adventure exploring the rock climbing on a glorious gritstone crag.

ARRIVE AT THE ADVENTURE HUB

Your instructor will welcome you and discuss the aims of the course and you own aspirations over a great cup of fresh Italian coffee or tea.

COLLECT AND CHECK YOUR EQUIPMENT

You will be sized up for helmets, rock shoes and harnesses. All you need do is check you have food, a drink and clothing that is suitable for the conditions.

TRAVEL TO CLIMB LOCATION

The exact location will depend on the weather and the aims and abilities of the group. Typically this is a 15 minute drive from The Adventure Hub.

PRACTICAL CLIMBING SESSION

Your instructor will demonstrate and explain the basics of the safety system and give you a chance to practise tying in and belaying each other. You will then be shown and coached on different key climbing techniques as you scale a number of routes throughout the day all whilst gaining confidence and experience with the rope systems. Usually we cover a number of buttresses along the crag over the course of the day.

BACK TO THE ADVENTURE HUB

Once we are off the hill we will return to The Adventure Hub. With fresh coffee in hand, we summarise the key learning points from the days adventure, discuss your progress so far and set some personalised development targets for your blossoming climbing career.

DAY TWO

9:30-16:30

PRACTICAL CLIMBING SESSION

After coffee and a brief chat outlining the day. We head out with the aim to give you the opportunity to experience a completely different climbing venue, refine and improve what was covered on the first day and broaden your experience of climbing generally. Many people decide to try some abseiling at this point but that is just one of many options that are open to you.

BACK TO THE ADVENTURE HUB

Once we are off the hill you will return to the Adventure Hub for the final time. Here we'll discuss your overall progress and set you some personalised development targets to get you fulfilling your personal ambitions in the weeks and months to come. Hopefully you will be back for more soon!

  • When participation as part of an open group isn't appropriate we can arrange private tuition. This allows for a more tailored approach and a much wider range of adaptions such as assisted climbing and abseiling techniques for participants with significant physical or mobility issues.

  • If private tuition is unaffordable then we can sometimes offer subsidised places to bring the price back in line with our scheduled courses .These are provided by the Pure Outdoor Foundation whose goal is to bring as many people as possible into the outdoors, please enquire about availability.

  • Clear communication before the activity is crucial so, as well as telephone and email conversations, we can also arrange to meet participants directly at a venue days or weeks beforehand to identify any specific barriers and begin addressing any anxieties.
