Refresh Core Winter Skills
Learn Mountaineering Skills
Explore Challenging Terrain
Our Winter Mountaineering Course bridges the gap between walking and climbing and therefore the difference between our Winter Skills Courses and Winter Climbing Courses. It is aimed at people who have winter hill walking experience and want to be moving on steeper and more challenging terrain.
The course teaches you the skills required for moving safely on steeper terrain during winter such as gullies and rocky ridges using ropes and mountaineering techniques.
Refresh your core winter skills such as good foot-work, cramponing, using ice axes, avalanche awareness and navigation. It is essential to have these fundamental skills at a good level before moving onto steeper terrain.
We will also introduce ropes, harnesses and basic belays.
Move onto steeper terrain, looking at personal techniques for moving safely, how and when to use a rope including simple snow and rock anchors.
During the course you’ll put the skills you have learned into practice as we move through the mountains on steeper snow terrain, typically a grade 1 gully.
You’ll have your guide climbing alongside keeping you right as you make decisions, choose anchors and make belays.
You must have either attended one of our Winter Skills Courses or have a good amount of Winter Hillwalking experience.
As we migrate from summer to winter it is worth thinking about what additional equipment you will need. Along with the usual summer hill-walking equipment, you will require stiff soled mountaineering boots (at least B2 rated) these can be hired locally but most people choose to buy a pair.
You will need 2 x Ice Axes and Crampons for this course, crampons must fit your boot well. Helmets and Harnesses will necessary and will be provided.
If you need to hire any equipment, please let us know. This course is currently under a promotion offering complimentary hire of Ice Axe and Crampons.
If necessary it is possible to travel up to the course on a weekend by getting an early train on Saturday morning - more info on our FAQ.
