The Pure Outdoor Winter Climbing course is designed for those who have winter walking and perhaps some winter mountaineering and rock climbing experience, and for those who have plans to climb winter routes safely and independently.
During the course you will climb grade 1 to 3 winter routes using two technical axes, climbing in pitches and using both mountaineering and climbing techniques to do so safely.
As your skills and confidence grow, the course builds up the skills used and we always use locations that suit you and allow you to learn as much as possible, during the course you will:
Refresh your basic winter mountaineering skills.
Be able to crampon effectively, have the core winter skills and be able to evaluate the snowpack before moving onto steeper slopes
Learn to tie in, winter rope work, snow/ice and rock belays and simple anchors on a grade 1 gully
Try climbing a mixed route (snow, ice and rock) at grade two. We’ll look at safe movement, decision-making, gear placements, anchors, belays, rope-work and stance management.
Your instructor will focus today on climbing techniques, stance management, protecting lead climbing and more decision-making.
On the course we aim to have you climbing and learning as much as possible to give you that climbing confidence.
You must have attended a winter skills course of some kind or have prior experience, it is also preferable that you have had some summer climbing experience.
As we migrate from summer to winter it is worth thinking about what additional equipment you will need. Along with the usual summer hill-walking equipment, you will require stiff soled mountaineering boots (at least B2 rated) these can be hired locally but most people choose to buy a pair.
You will need 2 x Ice Axes and Crampons for this course, crampons must fit your boot well. Helmets and Harnesses will necessary and will be provided.
If you need to hire any equipment, please let us know. This course is currently under a promotion offering complimentary hire of Ice Axe and Crampons.
If necessary it is possible to travel up to the course on a weekend by getting an early train on Saturday morning - more info on our FAQ.
