With a Pure Outdoor Peak District Navigation Course you can start your journey to master the art of navigation. For those of you looking at getting started in the outdoors, or those wanting to start again from a clean slate. We will look into all of the basics of map reading including some basic uses of the compass. A great introduction to the navigation skills you need to get out and about. On completion of this course, participants will be able to plan and follow walks in the countryside mainly on paths and tracks.


This course is suitable for those of you who are seasoned walkers looking for some formal tuition or if you are looking at getting out walking and don't know where to start.

The Beginner Navigation Course covers the syllabus and is assessed to the Bronze NNAS National Navigation Award Scheme. Since 2016, when the NNAS became accredited with the SCQF (Scottish Credit & Qualification Framework). Registration onto the course and certification is included in the price.

Our navigation courses are based from our dedicated training centre in the Peak District. With complimentary tea & coffee, parking and wifi. No hidden extras.

Equipment Required:

Standard hillwalking gear including good waterproofs and walking boots/shoes. A packed lunch and a drink are also necessary. We provide maps and have some compasses available to borrow or buy. Do bring your own compass if you have one.

Minimum Age

Participants aged 15+ can attend our scheduled courses independently. We offer family days out for kids age 6+, private courses to kids groups from age 9+ and scheduled 'summer camp' courses just for teenagers 13-17. All participants under the age of 18 must bring a completed 'Parental Consent Form' that can be downloaded here.
