Course Overview

It is finally time to get to grips with your GPS on a Pure Outdoor GPS Navigation Course. This course is aimed at those of you who are considering buying a GPS or already own one and are looking at getting the best from it.

Based at our training centre, The Adventure Hub, in the Peak District you will begin by examining some of the theory of how GPS works, the functions it provides and what it's benefits and limitations are. From here we take it outside and onto the hill as you learn to use GPS to navigate effectively and safely. All the time you will be comparing the differences between traditional navigation and that of the GPS so you can choose the best strategy for a given situation. By using the moorland and hills that are local to us we have time to re-visit the centre at the end of the afternoon to look at how to get your GPS interacting with a computer so you can review where we have been and begin to plan your next adventure.

Course Outcomes

  • How to setup your GPS correctly
  • Find out what the various pages show
  • Understand what the buttons and keys tell us
  • Learn how to name, change location coordinates and enter waypoints
  • Navigate Goto's and go find hidden Geocaches
  • Learn how you can navigate to a selected point on the map page
  • It is difficult to cater for all computer types and GPS devices but we will try and discuss how your GPS works with your computer

Course Information

YOUR GPS NAVIGATION COURSE

9:30 - 16:30

Get ready to explore the world of GPS navigation alongside traditional navigation methods.

ARRIVE AT THE ADVENTURE HUB BASE

Your instructor will welcome you and discuss the aims of the course and your own aspirations over a great cup of fresh Italian coffee or tea.

CLASSROOM SESSION

A brief theory session introducing the fundamentals of GPS units, how they work, their benefits and limitations and a discussion of key strategies that are relevant to GPS navigation. Safety in the hills will underpin this session.

COLLECT AND CHECK YOUR EQUIPMENT

You'll need to collect maps and compasses and check that your GPS are fully charged and get ready to go.

TRAVEL TO WALK LOCATION

The exact location will depend on the weather and the aims and abilities of the group. We typically aim to walk straight out from the Adventure Hub.

PRACTICAL NAVIGATION SESSION

The aim of the day is that you will leave the course with the skills to navigate with a GPS confidently using waypoints, routes and tracks. You will also understand how you can use software to buy additional maps, send user data to/from your device, manage data files and become involved in the growing sport of Geocaching.

BACK TO THE ADVENTURE HUB

Once we are off the hill we will return to the Adventure Hub. Here we'll look further into the GPS functionality for route planning and recording and compatibility with computers. Your instructor will then discuss a personalised progression plan with you to suit your aspirations.

  • Standard hillwalking gear including good waterproofs (jackets and trousers)
  • Good quality walking boots/shoes with a good tread
  • Your GPS unit plus batteries/full charge (we do have some to borrow and experiment with)
  • A good supply of snacks and a drink
  • Warm clothing including spares layers, gloves and hat
  • 5% of sales go to The Pure Outdoor Foundation

Ideally you will already have some traditional navigation experience which will help you understand the underlying principles and limitations of GPS units. If you don't already have this experience then you could consider attending our 'Right Way in a Day' course which would be the ideal preparation. These courses are always available on the day before this GPS course.

  • We offer free camping kit for guests staying locally and looking to cut down on luggage.
  • Our staff are trained to prolong the life of equipment used on this course, where it is possible to recycle equipment at the end of its life, we do so appropriately.
  • We operate in small teams at low ratios to reduce our impact on the venues we use and other countryside users.
  • We donate 5% of the value of all sales to The Pure Outdoor Foundation.

  • The physical and mental benefits of outdoor activities are numerous and well documented, we firmly believe that those benefits should be available to as many people as possible.

  • If you are interested in experiencing any of our activities but feel unable to do so then please contact us to discuss your specific needs, we will always try to find a solution that works for you.

  • There are a range of simple adaptions we can make to our scheduled courses such as choosing venues with minimal walking or easy access to toilet facilities, providing cold storage facilities for temperature sensitive medications, allowing additional time or arranging for participants to be accompanied by a trusted aide.

  • When participation as part of an open group isn't appropriate we can arrange private tuition. This allows for a more tailored approach and a much wider range of adaptions such as assisted climbing and abseiling techniques for participants with significant physical or mobility issues.

  • If private tuition is unaffordable then we can sometimes offer subsidised places to bring the price back in line with our scheduled courses .These are provided by the Pure Outdoor Foundation whose goal is to bring as many people as possible into the outdoors, please enquire about availability.

  • Clear communication before the activity is crucial so, as well as telephone and email conversations, we can also arrange to meet participants directly at a venue days or weeks beforehand to identify any specific barriers and begin addressing any anxieties.

FAQs

Start time: 09:30 - Finish time: . Please note, these times are approximate and could be subject to minor changes. Please leave plenty of time when booking public transport.
As much as many of our instructors are dog lovers, this often isn't suitable if you are booking onto a scheduled course, as we can't guarantee that other members of the group don't have an allergy or problem with dogs. If you do want to bring a pet, we will happily accommodate you if you book a private instructor for you or your group.

Anyone aged 13 or over can attend any of our scheduled courses with the exception of Mountain Biking and Winter Skills where the minimum age is 18 unless accompanied by a parent.

We hold an AALA license and are able to take out children who are younger than 13, however we only offer this on a private guided basis. See our private guiding rates, as this can work out very competitive, especially when booking as a family. There is no maximum age, if you feel young enough to attend then you are very welcome!
