Course Overview

A two day practical Advanced Navigation Course based in the Peak District aimed at enhancing your already advanced skills to get you out exploring the wilder and more remote parts of the UK. Aimed at navigators with a strong experience base wanting to push away from the paths and tracks, our Advanced Navigation Course offers an in depth insight into more technical navigation methods.

You will focus on the use of smaller and more infrequent features and navigating through poor weather or in the dark. On completion of this rigorous course you will be able to plan and follow routes in all open countryside, forest or hill environments and will have gained a lot of confidence in your ability to navigate in difficult and challenging conditions.

Based at the Adventure Hub in the heart of the Peak District, you will be perfectly situated to launch out onto the high moorland, crags and ridges of the Dark Peak.

Please note this course starts around midday on the first day and finishes in the early evening (to practice some night navigation). On the second day, the course will run from 09:30 to 16:30.

Course Information

YOUR ADVANCED NAVIGATION TRAINING (GOLD NNAS) COURSE
Day One
12:30 - 21:00

Get ready to further enhance your hard earned navigation skills on this in-depth and informative practical weekend that will focus on boosting your confidence whilst accessing more remote terrain.

ARRIVE AT THE ADVENTURE HUB BASE

Your instructor will welcome you and discuss the aims of the course and you own aspirations over a great cup of fresh Italian coffee or tea.

CLASSROOM SESSION
A brief theory session covering the advanced theory of compass techniques and micro navigation as well as safe and practical movement at night. As ever safety in the hills will underpin this session.

COLLECT AND CHECK YOUR EQUIPMENT
You'll need to collect maps and compasses and check that your rucksack is suitably packed ready for what the weather may throw at you.

TRAVEL TO WALK LOCATION
The exact location will depend on the weather, aims and abilities of the group. Our walk location will usually be within 20 minutes drive of The Adventure Hub so we will travel dressed and ready to walk immediately upon arrival.

PRACTICAL NAVIGATION SESSION
Your instructor will demonstrate new advanced practical skills and give you the chance to refresh your own skills before upping the ante with more demanding skills and navigation targets. We cover safe and effective movement over challenging terrain in time for night fall. The route for the evening will encourage new techniques to be adopted rapidly. A lot of time will be spent exploring advanced compass techniques and learning to read the surrounding contours and absorb and reflect on clues experienced in your immediate journey despite limited visibility.

BACK TO THE ADVENTURE HUB
Once we are off the hill we will return to the Adventure Hub. With a mug of hot chocolate in hand, we summarise the key learning points from the evenings adventure and discuss your progress so far and set some personalised development targets for day two.

Day Two
9:30 - 16:30

THE CHALLENGE
The second hill day we shift independence and leading over to you whilst we refine and consolidate on the learning from day one and continue to push your appreciation and use of micro contour features. As you become more confident your instructor will offer you the chance to further consolidate your skills by setting increasingly and suitably challenging targets for you to guide the group to. You will choose a suitable navigation strategy in discussion with your instructor, execute it and reflect on it afterwards. Your fellow group members will use this as an opportunity to track and relocate themselves once you arrive at your destination.

BACK TO THE ADVENTURE HUB
Once we are off the hill you will return to the Adventure Hub for the final time. Here we'll discuss your overall progress in line with the Gold NNAS syllabus and set you some personalised development targets to get you fulfilling your personal ambitions and preparing for the assessment day in the future – Good Luck!

FAQs

Start time: 12:30 - Finish time: 16:30. Please note, these times are approximate and could be subject to minor changes. Please leave plenty of time when booking public transport.
As much as many of our instructors are dog lovers, this often isn't suitable if you are booking onto a scheduled course, as we can't guarantee that other members of the group don't have an allergy or problem with dogs. If you do want to bring a pet, we will happily accommodate you if you book a private instructor for you or your group.

We get lots of questions about our navigation course and people are often asking which one is most suitable. We tend to point a lot of people at our Beginner Navigation Course as it is a great starting point.

To make life easier for you, we have also designed a course comparison table to help you choose the best course for you and to help you find out what you may learn!

We are exceptionally lucky to be located a 5 minute walk from Bamford Train Station on the railway line that links Sheffield to Manchester. This also means we are very easy to get to from London.

We have noticed that the first connecting train from London is often around 09:36am, and courses often start at 09:30am, if you let us know that you are coming in on the train, we will happily delay the course start to suit.

We try to stick to our published course finish times but occasionally conditions on the day mean we overrun slightly. If you are travelling home by train please ensure that you have left sufficient time after the course end time and inform your instructor on the day of your travel plans.
Anyone aged 13 or over can attend any of our scheduled courses, either with or without an accompanying adult.
We do hold an AALA license and are able to take out younger children, however we only offer this on a private guided basis. See our private guiding rates, as this can work out very competitive, especially when booking as a family.
There is no maximum age, if you feel young enough to attend then you are very welcome!
It is essential that you let us know about any medical condition or injury when booking and that you also let your instructor know on the starting day of your course. This information will remain completely confidential but is essential to allow us to tailor our activities to suit you and to ensure the safety of other group members.

Bookings can be made online or over the phone. All of our courses can be booked in 3 ways:

a) Attend a scheduled course.

These are open to the public to anyone that meets the pre-requisites. We often advertise many dates for each course, we generally always list 12 months of available dates. This is the most popular and often works out the most cost-effective way of attending our courses.

b) Add a date to our schedule.

On some courses, we can add extra dates to our schedule, providing you are booking for a certain minimum number of participants, this could be as low as only 2 people. To give us plenty of time to assign staff to your course, you can only add a date to the schedule if it is more than 7 days in advance.

c) Make a private booking.

All of our courses can be booked privately, with a private instructor just for you or your group. This gives you the flexibility to book any date that suits you and also it means the instructor can fine-tune the course content to suit your aspirations. To make a private booking, you just need to fill out a booking request, we will then get back to you with availability and a price.

d) Book our premium 'Private Booking Plus+' service.

All the benefits of the private booking service, with lots of additional extras including meet & greet at your hotel, luxury picnic hamper including Champagne, digital photo pack, flexible booking arrangements and a pre-activity consultancy to allow your first-class instructor extra time to design your special day. To make a private booking plus+ booking, you just need to fill our a booking request, we will then get back to you with availability and a price.

Almost all courses begin and end at our base, The Adventure Hub, where you will have access to complimentary tea and coffee.

We do not provide food as part of our courses and you will need to bring a packed lunch along for each day. There is a cafe on-site that can provide you with sandwiches, cakes and drinks. If you pre-book a lunch with them they will deliver it fresh to our offices first thing each morning. Taste Buds cafe can be reached directly on 01433 208008.
