Course Overview
The Hill and Moorland Leader scheme is designed for those leading hillwalkers in non-mountainous, upland areas of the UK and Ireland and looks at the leadership skills required to confidently lead walking groups in such areas. The Hill and Moorland Leader is a nationally recognised qualification and is administered by Mountain Training. The award is particularly relevant to teachers, scout leaders and those involved in supervising Duke of Edinburgh expeditions for young people in upland areas of the UK.
The scheme is open to all hillwalkers who are at least eighteen years of age and interested in leading in the hills.
The three-day Hill and Moorland Leader Assessment course is based in the High Peak and assesses competence in the skills needed to lead walking groups in upland areas.
Mountain Training England provider Adventure Unlimited in conjunction with Pure Outdoor is offering the opportunity to participate in a ML Training course based from Pure Outdoor HQ.
STAGES IN THE HILL AND MOORLAND LEADER SCHEME
- Gain personal hill walking experience. This should amount to at least twenty hill walking days over a period of at least twelve months.
- Register for the Hill and Moorland Leader scheme with Mountain Training. In order to do this you will need to be a current member of a UK mountaineering council e.g. British Mountaineering Council (BMC). Registering for the scheme will give you access to a digital logbook (DLOG) where you can record your hillwalking experience.
- Attend a Hill and Moorland Leader Training course.
- Consolidate experience between training and assessment courses.
- Attend a Hill and Moorland Leader Assessment course. Before attending an assessment course candidates must have completed a minimum of 40 walks in at least 3 different upland areas. You must also hold a current, valid first aid certificate.

Prior to attending this course candidates must:
- Have attended a Walking Group Leader, Hill and Moorland Leader or Mountain Leader training course (or have been granted exemption by Mountain Training).
- Have experienced a minimum of forty quality hill days. This experience should be gained in at least three different hill areas.
- Have assisted with the leading of walking groups.
- Hold a current, valid first aid certificate.

- We encourage car sharing wherever feasible.
- We encourage the use of public transport on all our courses. Bamford Railway Station is 5 minutes' walk and we enjoy direct bus connections to Sheffield and nearby villages.
- We offer free camping kit for guests staying locally and looking to cut down on luggage.
- Our staff are trained to prolong the life of equipment used on this course, where it is possible to recycle equipment at the end of its life, we do so appropriately.
- We operate in small teams at low ratios to reduce our impact on the venues we use and other countryside users.
- We donate 5% of the value of all sales to The Pure Outdoor Foundation.
