Summary
As the name suggests, Bouldering is the art and science of climbing boulders. By restricting the height of the climbs, the need for ropes and other rock climbing kit is removed. A pair of shoes, a bag of chalk and a bouldering mat to cushion your landing are all that are required to enjoy the experience of moving over real rock. This one day course is suitable for anyone wanting to learn the essential skills of bouldering outdoors in a safe and enjoyable way.

The Peak District has a wealth of bouldering options available, with problems suitable for beginners through to elite climbers, allowing our experienced instructors to choose the appropriate level of challenge for you. Climbers of all standards regularly use bouldering as one of the most effective ways to improve their strength and overall technique and this course is an excellent option for developing climbing technique as a progression from our Beginner Climbing Course.
Course Outcomes
  • Safety techniques - mat placement and spotting
  • Bouldering techniques - moving effectively and efficiently
  • Experience of several bouldering venues
  • Using guidebooks and understanding grading systems
  • Understanding of Ethics and Etiquette
Course Information
After arriving at our base, The Adventure Hub, your instructor will briefly outline the objectives for the day and ensure that everyone has climbing shoes, a chalk bag and a bouldering mat to use. Very quickly you will be travelling out to the first venue for the day which will be chosen on the basis of weather conditions along with the experience and ambitions of the group as a whole. The vast majority of venues that we use are around a 15 minute drive from our office. Once you have arrived you can expect to walk for between 5 and 15 minutes to arrive at the boulders themselves.

Initially the focus is on safety and you will learn about the correct use of bouldering mats and how to spot another climber. These skills will continue to be refined throughout the day but the main focus quickly shifts onto climbing effectively and efficiently. The range of boulder problems that are available to us, both in terms of difficulty levels and styles of climbing, ensure that you will quickly pick up tips and advice on how to improve your climbing.

After a quick stop to eat your packed lunch (not provided) we generally move on to a different venue so that you get more of a feel for the variety of options available to you in the Peak District. We will continue to work on climbing technique but will also talk about other related subjects such as how to use guidebooks, selecting a bouldering mat of your own, environmental impact, ethics and etiquette of bouldering.

At the end of the day we return to The Adventure Hub for a coffee and a debrief. Now is your opportunity to pick the instructors brains about anything more you would like to know along with suggestions of how you can progress even further.
We can provide all necessary equipment but if you already have your own climbing shoes then you are strongly advised to bring them with you.

Participants must have a basic level of climbing experience indoors or outside.

As much as many of our instructors are dog lovers, this often isn't suitable if you are booking onto a scheduled course, as we can't guarantee that other members of the group don't have an allergy or problem with dogs. If you do want to bring a pet, we will happily accommodate you if you book a private instructor for you or your group.
Almost all courses begin and end at our base, The Adventure Hub, where you will have access to complimentary tea and coffee.

We do not provide food as part of our courses and you will need to bring a packed lunch along for each day. There is a cafe on-site that can provide you with sandwiches, cakes and drinks. If you pre-book a lunch with them they will deliver it fresh to our offices first thing each morning. Taste Buds cafe can be reached directly on 01433 208008.

On some courses, we can add extra dates to our schedule, providing you are booking for a certain minimum number of participants, this could be as low as only 2 people. To give us plenty of time to assign staff to your course, you can only add a date to the schedule if it is more than 7 days in advance.

c) Make a private booking.
All of our courses can be booked privately, with a private instructor just for you or your group. This gives you the flexibility to book any date that suits you and also it means the instructor can fine-tune the course content to suit your aspirations. Anyone aged 13 or over can attend any of our scheduled courses, either with or without an accompanying adult.
We do hold an AALA license and are able to take out younger children, however we only offer this on a private guided basis. See our private guiding rates, as this can work out very competitive, especially when booking as a family.
There is no maximum age, if you feel young enough to attend then you are very welcome!
We are exceptionally lucky to be located a 5 minute walk from Bamford Train Station on the railway line that links Sheffield to Manchester. This also means we are very easy to get to from London.

We have noticed that the first connecting train from London is often around 09:36am, and courses often start at 09:30am, if you let us know that you are coming in on the train, we will happily delay the course start to suit.

We try to stick to our published course finish times but occasionally conditions on the day mean we overrun slightly. If you are travelling home by train please ensure that you have left sufficient time after the course end time and inform your instructor on the day of your travel plans.
