Course Overview

The 1 day ITC Outdoor First Aid course is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts seeking training so they are better prepared if the worst happens or for those acting in a supporting role who will be accompanied by a more qualified first aider (we regularly deliver this course, for example, to assistant expedition leaders). It is also ideal for DofE participants. Please note that it is not suitable for validating NGB qualifications.

It involves 8 hours of tuition and includes an element of assessment. The main difference between this course and the 2 day Outdoor First Aid course is the focus is on treating life threatening emergencies without time being spent on longer term incident management. The aim of the course is to enable students to recognise when someone has a medical emergency and be able to give immediate appropriate assistance at first aid level.

The trainers will seek to keep medical jargon and terminology to a minimum, concentrating on what you do in different situations rather than what you know. To this end students learn a set of general principles which they can adapt to different situations. The process of progressive skill development will be based on situation assessment and casualty examinations. The course is of a very practical nature and will involve ‘treating’ other course members and acting as a casualty.

On successful completion students will be awarded the Outdoor First Aid (Emergency Action) certificate which is valid for three years.

Once registered for the course through this website, a member of staff from Tor Lea Training (who will be delivering this course) will be in touch to confirm availability and send course instructions and information on how to pay the final balance.

First Aid Trainers

We only use trainers who have extensive experience in wilderness settings and most are mountaineering instructors employed full time in the outdoor industry. We feel this is essential for Outdoor First Aid courses focussed on remote locations and improvised casualty care scenarios.
