Here are some of our frequently asked questions. We try to list as many as possible here as we are often out in the hills working and playing so we cannot always answer the phone to answer that urgent little niggling question.
How do I book?
Bookings can be made online or over the phone. If you have received a copy of our new brochure, they can also be made with the booking form. Payments can be made online by card, by BACS or by cheque.
What is the instructor:client ratio all about?
You will get more out of your time with us if you work in a group where the numbers suit the activity. We favour small instructor to client ratios so that you benefit from quality time and instruction, where you have time to ask all the questions you want, the routes chosen can be tailored to suit you, and we can take plenty of time to show you specific techniques and skills. By the end of our courses we want you to be as safe and independent as possible.
Why don't you provide accommodation for all your courses?
We organise both residential and non-residential courses. If we think the course will benefit from us all staying somewhere together we'll make it a residential course. For others we ask you to arrange your own accommodation since some people will want to stay in luxury accommodation, others will opt for a B&B and others will be happy to camp (we’ve even had a few people sleeping in their cars!). If you need help with accommodation on our non-residential courses get in touch and we’ll try to help out or try the recommendations on our links page.
What if I need to cancel a course booking?
Please refer to the Terms and Conditions of your booking.
What equipment is provided?
We can supply all technical equipment except climbing shoes. For navigation and hill walking courses we just ask you to supply your own map and compass. Check out our online kit lists and get in touch if you aren’t able to get any other equipment you need.
Do I need my own insurance?
We have professional indemnity insurance but would always recommend that you purchase your own personal accident insurance (including cancellation insurance) for all U.K. based courses. It’s a small cost to give peace of mind! For all overseas courses, you must purchase specialist rescue, medical and repatriation insurance and details of your insurance policy must be sent to us by the final payment date. What if I have a specific objective or want to learn things not offered on one of your courses?

What about under 18s?
From Spring 2016 Pure Outdor have applied to by licensed by the Adventure Activity Licensing Service to deliver outdoor activities to under 18's.
To clarify how this integrates to the courses that we deliver here is a guide to the permitted ages for all of our courses:
- Under 11 years old
Can attend Privately booked 'Family Activity Days' accompanied by parent or legal guardian.
- 11-17 years old
A Privately Booked instructor or a group of instructors can be booked for unaccompanied groups and individuals in this age range (Scout Groups, Youth Groups, Schools, Parties, Private Groups).
- 13-17 years old
Can attend our 'Courses for Young People' designed for teenagers looking for outdoor experiences and also educational courses designed to upskill participants in activities such as climbing and hillwalking. These courses are delivered along the same lines as out adult courses but are exclusively for teenagers.
- 16 years old+
From this age, participants can book onto our standard advertised courses open to the public.
Will you give my details to other people?
All information supplied to us on your booking form remains completely confidential.
What is the timetable for courses?
For residential courses accommodation will be provided for the night before the course starts. Then we will meet after breakfast the following morning at 9.00am and be finished at 4:30 pm on the last day. For non-residential courses we will meet somewhere convenient on the first morning of the course and a typical day lasts from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm.
What about transport arrangements?
For those arriving by train the night before or are without a car we are more than happy to pick you up from your Hathersage/Grindleford and drop you off at the end of the day. We are happy to pick you up from Hathersage at 8.30am prior to your course commencing.
How do I travel up from London?
If necessary it is possible to travel up to the course on a weekend by getting an early train on Saturday morning:
Navigation Courses: It is possible to travel up on the morning of the course from London on the 06:37 London train to Sheffield and then changing in Sheffield to Grindleford and you should arrive at the course only 10 minutes late. however you must get a taxi from Grindleford train station to Stoney Middleton (about £10 - this must be pre booked, see below).
Climbing Course: You will miss part of the briefing but we can collect you from Grindleford train station as we travel from the training centre to one of the climbing venues at 9.30. However if your train is delayed you will need to make alternate arrangements to join the course from when you arrive (taxi).

How fit do I need to be?
It goes without saying that arriving fit and well is important if you want to get the most out of your course and is essential for succeeding on many of our objectives. Because of our personal approach we are able to discuss your experience and fitness levels with you. From this we will be able to advise you on suitable objectives – or a fitness regime!
Do you need to know about medical conditions?
It is essential that you let us know about any medical condition or injury when booking and that you also let your instructor know on the starting day of your course.This information will remain completely confidential but is essential to allow us to tailor our activities to suit you and to ensure the safety of other group members.
There is ample, free parking at the training centre.
Rock Shoe Hire
Rock shoes can be hired on the day if you are attending a climbing course.
In general, it is quite difficult for us to cater with people wanting to bring dogs on our courses. However, if you let us know in advance, we can usually accept people bringing their dog on the 1 or 2 day Peak District Navigation Course, providing they are well behaved and kept on a lead.
Please note that you will be out all day on most courses, so bring something to eat and drink.
We can often help with customers arriving by public transport (good on you!), we are happy to pick up at Hathersage or Grindleford Train station, if the arrival time ties in with that of our instructor driving to the training centre (approximately 8.30am). Alternatively a taxi from Grindleford to Pure Outdoor is about £9-10 with 2Nice Taxi's http://2nice-privatehire.co.uk, 07710 609699.
Free Tea, Coffee and Cake
We like to go the extra mile, at Pure Outdoor you are not a 'punter' or 'client' but a guest. On scheduled weekend courses we buy the cake and Tea and Coffee is on us. Lynne from up the road makes it and its really tasty!
