Summary
A week to get your head around lead climbing on the sharp end of the rope. This climbing week is a real treat and a true opportunity to put your skills to the test and walk away with some excellent lead climbing skills. With the opportunity to explore both the Gritstone outcrops of the Peak District and the beautiful mountain crags of Snowdonia National Park. With variety ranging from exposed mountain crags to wind blasted sea cliffs.
We will be exploring all aspects of climbing, tailored to suit your needs depending on your experience. With a low ratio of 1:2 we can ensure that we have sufficient time to have an in depth approach to learning. You will leave with a broad range of skills allowing you to get climbing independently after the course. If you just want to get out and have some great days in the hills, then why not have a look at the 5 day Multi Pitch Adventure week. With this course, you must have ‘the need to lead’.
Pre-Requisites
Some climbing experience required and a good level of fitness. If you attend the course as a 'competent second' you will get the most from the course.
Equipment Required
Clients attending this course would be expected to bring their own rock shoes, all other equipment can be provided. You are more than welcome to bring your own rack as that is what you will be using after the course.
Itinerary
Each day is based around a basic structure as outline below. However this is discussed on day 1 and the remainder of the course is based around a plan which is written up on day 1.
Day 1:
9am: Training Centre is open for course participants to come in, grab a drink and get prepared for a 9:30 am start.
9.30am: Briefing
We spend a good 30 minutes ensuring everybody is suitably kitted out with all of the technical equipment they need for the day. We have a good range of rock shoes available in stock and these can be hired for £3 per person per day.
10am: Go Climbing!
Depending on weather, group experience and size of group we select a local crag and jump in the Pure Outdoor minibus and go for it! This could be a 10 minute drive, it could be half an hour. Sometime we need to walk for 15-20 minutes to get to the climbing. Bring some decent trainers or walking boots.
Bring a packed lunch as we have lunch out at the crag
3.30pm: Last few routes!
Time to start packing up and heading back to the bus
4-4.30pm: Depending on where we went climbing, we usually head back to the Training Centre for a de-brief, climbing equipment amnesty and another cup of tea before finishing up the course with an extra theory session and heading home.
Day 2-5:
Depending on experience of the group and weather conditions the structure of the day is similar to that of day 1. We may venture to an indoor climbing wall for some of the day or spend some time on some theory at the training centre. You can discuss what you want to get from the course with your instructor on the first day and this day can be tailored around the needs of the group.
Accommodation Information
This course is non-residential, so if you do not live locally, you may need to arrange your own accommodation.
We have tried to make some good links with local B&B's, Guesthouses and Campsites to give you comprehensive choice when booking accommodation to coincide with your Pure Outdoor course.
This section has been broken down into two sections. Those travelling up on Public Transport and staying in the Hathersage area (we recommend this as it has a direct rail link with Sheffield and Manchester and your course instructor can come pick you up on the morning of the course) and a section for those of you who will be driving up to the course who have a little more freedom.
The Pure Outdoor Training centre is about 4 miles from Hathersage and Bakewell and only a mile or so from the villages of Eyam and Calver.
