Summary
Come learn to climb with a Pure Outdoor Beginner Climbing Course. An ideal starting point for those with little or no prior experience of rock climbing, this starts with the 'Outdoor Taster Session' on day 1 then continues to develop more skills on the second day. On the highly accessible gritstone crags of the Peak District this course aims to get you climbing confidently while teaching the essential skills of rope work and belaying. We hope to take in some of the Peak District's many and varied routes to build fundamental climbing skills for the future. With some of the most famous venues in the country there is a good chance you could find yourself at Stanage Edge, Froggatt Edge and Burbage Edge amongst many others.
During this course you will learn about the fundamentals of rock climbing including how to use the essential equipment, footwear, basic climbing moves, abseiling, belaying, about rock types and how to use guidebooks. It is designed for people with little or no experience in rock climbing. If you are looking for a course where you can focus on becoming a competent 'second' or looking at some more rope techniques, have a look at our lower ratio 2 day Intermediate Navigation Course.
Pre-Requisites
None
Equipment Required
Most clients bring their own rock shoes. They can however be hired.
Itinerary
Day 1:
9am: Training Centre is open for course participants to come in, grab a drink and get prepared for a 9:30 am start.
9.30am: Briefing
We spend a good 30 minutes ensuring everybody is suitably kitted out with all of the technical equipment they need for the day. We have a good range of rock shoes available in stock and these can be hired for £3 per person per day.
10am: Go Climbing!
Depending on weather, group experience and size of group we select a local crag and jump in the Pure Outdoor minibus and go for it! This could be a 10 minute drive, it could be half an hour. Sometime we need to walk for 15-20 minutes to get to the climbing. Bring some decent trainers or walking boots.
Bring a packed lunch as we have lunch out at the crag
3.30pm: Last few routes!
Time to start packing up and heading back to the bus
4-4.30pm: Depending on where we went climbing, we usually head back to the Training Centre for a de-brief, climbing equipment amnesty and another cup of tea before finishing up the course and heading home.
Day 2:
Depending on experience of the group and weather conditions the structure of the day is similar to that of day 1. We may venture to an indoor climbing wall for some of the day or spend some time on some theory at the training centre. You can discuss what you want to get from the course with your instructor on the first day and this day can be tailored around the needs of the group.
Accommodation Information
This course is non-residential, so if you do not live locally, you may need to arrange your own accommodation.
We have tried to make some good links with local B&B's, Guesthouses and Campsites to give you comprehensive choice when booking accommodation to coincide with your Pure Outdoor course.
This section has been broken down into two sections. Those travelling up on Public Transport and staying in the Hathersage area (we recommend this as it has a direct rail link with Sheffield and Manchester and your course instructor can come pick you up on the morning of the course) and a section for those of you who will be driving up to the course who have a little more freedom.
The Pure Outdoor Training centre is about 4 miles from Hathersage and Bakewell and only a mile or so from the villages of Eyam and Calver.

Awesome!!
I would highly recommend the beginner climbing course as it was a great way for me experience my first taste of outdoor climbing. Firstly, Guy the course director was excellent totally professional, yet felt like we were out climbing with mates for the weekend. On the first day we eased ourselves into things at windgather rocks, a great choice considering the weather, even managed to get some sunshine-nice one! Day 2 was memorable at the amazing stanage popular, managed to do some fantastically named climbs including a personal fave 'Christmas crack'.I'm defiantly looking forward to developing my skills further with Pure Outdoor, an excellent choice.

Brilliant climbing intro, will be back
Brilliant weekend climbing on the beginner's course, with unfamiliar gear and lingo feeling second nature after just a few hours with Guy. Started with a brief intro at the centre, then got stuck in to some blinding climbs, where I learnt as we climbed and never felt out of my depth or under-challenged. Guy judged the group's ability and eagerness perfectly, and read the ever-threatening weather to a tee. Cannot wait to get back to the Peak, just need the arms to start working again first.

Guy and Polly were professional while being approachable, friendly, enthusiatic and relaxed - all contributing to the confidence i felt with climbing and the progress i made during the day.

Fantstic weekend, will definitely be back
This was mine and my girlfriends first time climbing. Guy and Andy were both excellent teachers with a ton of knowledge. We did 14 climbs each over the two days and thoroughly enjoyed the weekend. I'm definitely hooked on climbing now, and have already started looking for my own gear!

Would recommend...
A really enjoyable couple of days spent around Burbage, Stanage Edge etc trying bouldering and top-rope climbing with three others (including my son)and Guy leading. The course fully met my expectations and I would recommend it for beginners or anyone wanting to try outdoor climbing for the first time. We got to try some quite challenging climbs during the two days, and the rain held off most of the time despite the low hanging clouds. Great scenery and nice to get outside for a couple of days.

Aching but happy!
Had a really enjoyable day on Saturday at Stanage for some first-time rock climbing. Harder work than I was expecting but very satisfying feeling at the end of the day - even though I didn't manage to complete the last few climbs. Maybe if I was 20 years younger and 4 stones lighter... I deserved a pint or two afterwards! Very friendly group, fantastic scenery and beautiful weather. Thanks - I might be be in touch about scrambling at some point!
