Summary
The ultimate winter skills course to develop your mountain skills this winter. Over the 5 day course, we aim to provide you with experience of using all of the winter skills required for Ice Axe and Crampon use, Winter Navigation, Avalanche Awareness and Avoidance, building Emergency Shelters, Route Planning and Basic Emergency Rope Work in the winter mountains. The practical hill days are backed up with 2 evenings of focused activities such as route planning or discussing theory elements of the course.
This course really suits the summer hill-walker who has spent little or no time in the mountains in winter practicing the above skills. This course covers all of the essentials and allows course participants to follow up these skills with mountain days to consolidate the experience. The course is residential (optional), we are based in the Aviemore Bunkhouse where there are shared and private rooms available. The Old Bridge Inn is right next door where course participants can spend the evening resting and sharing stories by the fire whilst enjoying a complimentary glass of special edition ‘Pure Outdoor Tullibardine Whisky’.
The key difference between the 2 day and 5 day course is there's obviously not as much time available to consolidate the skills and most participants find it useful to follow up this course by spending some time practicing the key skills under their own steam as soon as they can after the course is finished.
For all courses booked before January 2012 we are happy to offer complimentary Ice Axe and Crampon use.
Be sure to book early to avoid disappointment.
Pre-Requisites
A reasonable level of fitness and/or willing to be out and about in the Scottish Winter Mountains for 5 days. Summer hillwalking experience recommended.
Equipment Required
As we migrate from summer to winter it is worth thinking about what additional equipment you will need. Along with the usual summer hill-walking equipment, you will require stiff soled mountaineering boots (at least B2 rated) these can be hired locally but most people choose to buy a pair. You will need a walking Ice Axe and Crampons for this course, crampons must fit your boot well. Helmets will be required for some of the days and will be provided. If you need to hire any equipment, please let us know. This course is currently under a promotion offering complimentary hire of Ice Axe and Crampons.

Itinerary
Evening prior to course: Meeting at venue at 8pm.
Day 1: Get savvy in the Scottish Mountains.
Keywords: Equipment, crampons, ice axe, self arrest, weee, snow slopes, stopping a fall, moving efficiently
Today we will be looking at our equipment and the most efficient ways of using it. It may be as simple as learning how to walk again, starting with using our boot as a tool and the different ways of moving over snow. Once we progress we will look at the uses of an ice axe and how we can safeguard ourselves when crossing snow slopes.
During the afternoon we will look at using the axes to arrest ourselves in the event of a fall, getting plenty of practice to ensure that we are all happy with its application.
Once the basics and the use of the axe have been covered, we can look at the crampons, how they fit (how to fit them in the Scottish weather!) and the many ways of using them to move across snow and ice with style!
Evening : The day will finish with an avalanche avoidance chat (drinks welcome) in the comfort of the hut in time for tomorrows avalanche awareness day.
Day 2: How not to get lost in the Scottish Mountains
Keywords: navigation, map, compass, avalanche awareness, route, snow theory, temperature, slope theory, terrain, avalanche stats.
During day 2 we are going to use the above skills to go that little bit further into the mountains. Probably at a different venue we can look at snow slopes, slope aspect, the temperature gradient, avalanche avoidance, route finding, navigation in winter, route planning, terrain traps.
By the end of the day expect to have more knowledge about snow, the snowpack and how we can get an understanding of its stability. You will be able to carry out several tests on the snow to judge this.
Evening : During the evening you will be looking at winter mountain navigation, planning and making plans for the following days activities.
Day 3: A Mountain Adventure
We will be using the previous nights plans to enjoy a full day 'journeying' in the Scottish Mountains. We will have a look at decision making and tying in all of skills we have learnt the previous two days. We can use this opportunity to drive further to get more experience of the different areas of the highlands. There will be opportunity to look at the use of emergency rope work.
Day 4: Emergency Shelters
A day looking at and digging a variety of snow shelters. We will experiment using shovels, ice axes, and almost anything else that comes to hand! If you have decided that ropework would be of interest, this is the day on which we will show you a few simple ways to safeguard yourself and your companions, both up and down awkward steps. There may be opportunity to stay the night out on Tuesday evening (snow hole or bothy)
Day 5: The Final Adventure
Hillwalking is the game for Wednesday! A chance to practice all of the skills learnt throughout the week. The venue will be completely down to the group who will be expected to plan the days outing. Plenty of opportunity to go hillwalking anywhere in the local/not so local area! We will be returning to the hostel for de-briefs and drinks for those who are staying the night.

Winter Skills Week of Awesome Ness!
Once again another amazing course from Pure Outdoor. Having attended a beginner navigation course with Pure Outdoor - after how well that course was ran, I didnt have to think of where to book my winter skills course. The course was well structured and the knowledge available from the instructors Andy, Guy and Liam is first class. Having different instructors on a few days i thought was great as I picked up tips and knowledge available from all three. I now feel confident that i can tackle the mountains in winter. On the fourth day we got to put all our skills we have learnt to the test, With a challenging hill climb in crampons and a ridge walk in harsh conditions. We covered every aspect needed throughout the course. Navigation, Ice axe arrest, emergency rope work and shelters...cutting steps. The list is endless. And if there was something we wanted to learn all we had to do was ask and the instructor would work it into a day which i really valued. Also Guy can be persuaded with a cuddle and Haribos. Management Response: Thanks Ross.... Haribos make the world go round - cuddles won't get you a free trip to Stok Kangri... but worth a go!

A very good course! Well organised and run by Liam and Dan, I found it very interesting and worthwhile just a pity that the amount of snow was limited although this did not affect the course. Would recommend it to anyone.

Want to go up those hills? Get your winter skills!
The winter skills week was a fantastic and fun week and one which I would highly recommend. As I arrived in Avimore I was pleased to see the mountains and the ground conditions didn’t disappoint. The Cairngorm mountain range was vast and there was plenty of snow and ice so lots of opportunity to ‘get spikey’ as it later became known. During the week I recall following only a few paths and we mainly spent our time ascending steeper mountain sides making full use of our ice axes and crampons. We were fortunate to have some fantastically sunny weather, which, coupled with the snowy landscape, made for some epic views. The course gave me a real opportunity to put my kit and myself to the test and it was great to get off the beaten track. We were making our own tracks. After a week of hiking, navigating, self arrest, digging and rope work I feel more confident than ever. The course was a perfect introduction into the world of winter mountaineering and has given me the desire to learn the many other aspects of enjoying myself in the winter hills. The course had a good balance of the learning of skills and the opportunity to explore the Cairngorms. The course was professionally run but very laid back which made it all the more enjoyable. I'd like to thank Guy and Liam for a great week. See you on the 'beginners rock climbing' course soon.

5 days of mountain fun
From day one we were throwing in the deep end, with high winds battering the Cairngorms, we had to learn fast. Both Guy and Dave inspired confidence and knowledge making it easy to pick up new skills and feel safe even in the numerous white out conditions we had over the week. Although the course is structure into days where skills would be learned, I found that the instructors would introduce skills on the mountain if the situation suited, which was excellent, providing real experience of when to use a particular skill. A good example of that was getting off the summit of Cairngorm where we were introduced into pacing and to correctly judge the distance without falling off a cornice 600m away. This was an invaluable experience of getting out of a tricky situation. The final day with Stu was just as good we went through more Nav and some of the more advance tips and skills you can use for locating yourself on a mountain, such as slope aspect. All in all a great course, providing lots of information and real life skill, that are easily absorbed from the Instructors who all made it a fun and exciting as well as challenging week.

What an excellent experience!
What can I say? This is the second course that I have been on with Pure Outdoor and Guy and his team keep exceeding my expectations. Guy and Dave and the Pure Outdoor team have an excellent teaching method and I really got the full benefit from the course. Really can't speak highly enough of the course which was made even better by the great people and the instructors. I enjoyed it and leant so much that I've just booked myself onto the Morocco trip in October. Guy/Dave, thanks for an asolutely excellent and educational week - I've even perfected the art of brewing my own cup of 'Man Up'!!!!!!!

Winter Skills (Week)
Was very pleased with the content of this course, the weather was good to us (with respect to the course) as we experienced it all from rain through whiteouts to snow and high winds all with freeze thaw snow cover. Guy made sure the course was safe yet flexible enough for us to detour to Ben Nevis for a day to put all of our new learned skills into practice and the Ben threw it all at us including a proper whiteout with extreme conditions, a great navigation opportunity. I cannot praise this company enough. In fact I am currently booking a Navigation Course to consolidate what we have already learnt on this course. Excellent!!!!
