Summary
Our very popular winter skills weekend is the perfect quick hit, we aim to provide you with experience of using all of the skills required for Ice Axe and Crampon use, Winter Navigation and Avalanche Awareness and Avoidance. We will combine the training of these skills with some great days out on in the Cairngorms. This course will suit anyone looking to get stuck into winter hillwalking for the first time.
For all courses booked before January 2012 we are happy to offer complimentary Ice Axe and Crampon use.
The key difference between the 2 day and 5 day course is there's obviously not as much time available to consolidate the skills and most participants find it useful to follow up this course by spending some time practicing the key skills under their own steam as soon as they can after the course is finished.
Courses start with a meet and greet on Friday evening in the local 'Old Bridge Inn' pub and finish at approximately 4pm on the Sunday.
Be sure to book early to avoid disappointment.

Summer Hillwalking experience
Equipment Required
As we migrate from summer to winter it is worth thinking about what additional equipment you will need. Along with the usual summer hill-walking equipment, you will require stiff soled mountaineering boots (at least B2 rated) these can be hired locally but most people choose to buy a pair. You will need a walking Ice Axe and Crampons for this course, crampons must fit your boot well. Helmets will be required for some of the days and will be provided. If you need to hire any equipment, please let us know. This course is currently under a promotion offering complimentary hire of Ice Axe and Crampons.

Itinerary
This course is the first 2 days of the Winter Skills Week, the itinerary for the 2 days is outlined below.
Itinerary
Evening prior to course: Meeting at venue at 8pm.
Day 1: Get savvy in the Scottish Mountains, Ice Axe and Crampon Skills
Keywords: Equipment, crampons, ice axe, self arrest, snow slopes, stopping a fall, moving efficiently
Today we will be looking at our equipment and the most efficient ways of using it. It may be as simple as learning how to walk again, starting with using our boot as a tool and the different ways of moving over snow. Once we progress we will look at the uses of an ice axe and how we can safeguard ourselves when crossing snow slopes.
During the afternoon we will look at using the axes to arrest ourselves in the event of a fall, getting plenty of practice to ensure that we are all happy with its application.
Once the basics and the use of the axe have been covered, we can look at the crampons, how they fit (how to fit them in the Scottish weather!) and the many ways of using them to move across snow and ice with style!
Evening : The day will finish with an avalanche avoidance chat (drinks welcome) in the comfort of the hut in time for tomorrows avalanche awareness day.
Day 2: Winter Mountain Navigation, Avalanche Awareness, Skills Consolidation
Keywords: navigation, map, compass, avalanche awareness, route, snow theory, temperature, slope theory, terrain, avalanche stats.
During day 2 we are going to use the above skills to go that little bit further into the mountains. Probably at a different venue we can look at snow slopes, slope aspect, the temperature gradient, avalanche avoidance, route finding, navigation in winter, route planning, terrain traps.
By the end of the day expect to have more knowledge about snow, the snowpack and how we can get an understanding of its stability. You will be able to carry out several tests on the snow to judge this.
Evening : During the evening you will be looking at winter mountain navigation, planning and making plans for the following days activities.

Winter skills weekend in Scotland
What a fantastic weekend; We can't praise our instructor Liam enough for his patience and skills as a tutor. Whilst the conditions for winter walking were decidedly summery he put together a great weekend of activities for us and we all feel we were able to learn some great winter skills in addition to covering navigation and general hill skills. Plus the added bonus of bagging a Munro and scrambling along Fiachall Ridge. We all learnt a great deal from the weekend and feel we now have the confidence to put these into practice when we are out in winter conditions in the future.

First Step in Mountaineering
Just a quick "Thank You" to your team Liam and Dan for a great weekend in Scotland. Had a great time with a terrific bunch of people expertly and professionally led by Dan up on the mountain. Learned a lot and only wish I could have stayed longer, but I think my knee had probably gone as far as it could. However, the skills I picked up will certainly be put to use. I feel a lot happier about venturing out on the mountains in snow. Also have a much better understanding of my capabilities and limitations. Hope the rest of the mob had a good few days more and didn't get lost. Do pass on my thanks and appreciation to them as well for their support. Many thanks again to all and will certainly recommend Pure Outdoor to anyone and everyone considering walking out onto the mountains, either for the first time or needing to brush up and extend their skills.

Great first experience in the snow
Thanks to Guy and Dave for a great experience on the winter skills weekend. I would highly recommend this to anyone seeking to branch out inro winter walking. This will give you the confidence you need to tackle the snow yourself. The course is well thought out, and the bunk house acts as a friendly base for the trip as long as you aren't expecting luxury. Thanks again. Matt Hepwood

A top course and a top Guy!
A great refresher of the skills learned on the beginners course that I took the year before, and plenty of new skills learned too. Also familiarised with the coire, which has given me the confidence to go back by myself next year knowing that I will have some idea of what's what instead of having rely on someone else to tell me! Overall, really enjoyable and informative, and a good laugh too! I would happily recommend to a friend.
